A quilt is …

Two layers of fabric with batting in between, held together by stitching or yarn ties

            Fond memories

            Celebration of a marriage

            Creative expression

            Art

            Friendship

            A loving gift

            Comfort

            A thrifty use for fabrics

            Warmth in a cold winter

            Welcoming a baby

            Fun

A quilt is all that, and more.

Whatever the skill level, whatever the income level, whatever the other activities in each maker’s life, every quilt offers clues to what their life looked like. The historic quilts in this exhibit all have connections to Marathon County. They tell stories about their makers, and often are all that remain of these talented, self-sufficient women.
