These embroidery designs were inspired by quilts featured in the Marathon County Historical Society’s 2016-17 exhibit “Pieces of the Past: Quilts Tell a Story” at the Woodson History Center, Wausau, WI.

“Robin” is one square on a 1930s Friendship Quilt on which embroidered squares alternate with solid lilac blocks.  Each embroidered piece bears the name of the woman who stitched it.

“Chrysanthemums” and “Tulips” are part of a quilt cover made during the 1930s of cotton feed sacks.  Embroidered blocks alternate with pieced and appliqued baskets in the original.

Today’s needleworkers might choose to include these stitcheries in their own quilt, or use them  for a myriad of other purposes, such as pillows, framed art, or to decorate towels or tote bags.
