Background:

Population: 1905 - 860, 2000 - 993 plus part of Athens

Separated from the Holton Township in 1883.

Named for D. H. Johnson, partner of Frederick Reitbrock, Reitbrock Land and Lumber Co. The first settlers in Johnson were the Patrick and Horna Hogan family in 1881, homesteading a mile east of Milan.

About The Post Office:

1. Brucker in 1882 was the first P.O. in Johnson Township and was located in or near Section 4.. The P.O. was discontinued on July 7, 1884.

2. Northville was established on August 20, 1883 in SE 1/4 of Section 5 with James Girdwood as postmaster. It was discontinued on December 7, 1887 with papers sent to Dorchester in Clark County.

3. Wuertsburg was established on August 9, 1887 in NW 1/4 of Section 36 with Frank P. Weigand as postmaster. It was discontinued on April 14, 1904 with service from Athens.

4. Denny  was established on January 8, 1890 in Section 36 with Charles S. Quimette  as postmaster. It was discontinued on January 16, 1897 with papers sent to Abbotsford.

5. Corinth was established on October 5, 1895 in SW 1/4 Section 10 with Otto Newmann as postmaster. The P.O. was discontinued on January 31, 1934 with service from Athens.

There are currently no P.O.s active in the township.



Railroad:

Reitbrock built a railroad through the township from Athens to Abbotsford in 1879 called "Northeastern Annie" to haul lumber and logs to mills and markets. It was purchased by the Soo Line in 1913 and abandoned in 1972
