Background:

Settlers were first attracted to the area by the presence of nearby Big Sandy Creek.  Over the years, Sunset developed into a typical crossroads community that served local farmers.

According to one source, Joe Dingman built a small saloon on the corner of Hwys. Z & J in the 1880s and named it Sunset. Later, Manford Thorn -- then chairman of Easton Township -- bought the place and enlarged it enough to add a small store, post office and a second floor dance hall.

About The Post Office:

The P.O. located in the SW 1/4 of Sec. 18 was discontinued on July 31, 1901.
