T. 30 N. - R. 7 E., Sec. 31, Township of Maine

Founded:
January 1871

Background:

Located near the intersection of Hwy. A and 72nd Avenue, Schmidt's Ballroom is all that is left of this once thriving farming community. Schmidt's Ballroom dates back to the early 1930s and is typical of the halls which have played an important part in the social life of rural Wisconsin.

Taegesville was started when August Taege built a saloon along what was then Wausau Road (now Hwy. A). As local farmers began to produce surplus milk, Taege built a cheese factory and general store which also served for many years as the local post office. Presumably, Taegesville was named after the Taeges family whose family members served as postmasters at different times.
